NACRO is an independent voluntary organisation working to prevent crime by developing and implementing effective approaches to tackling crime and dealing constructively with offenders. It manages a wide range of projects throughout England and Wales including:
Housing projects which accommodate over 3,000 ex-offenders and other homeless and vulnerable people each year. NACRO also provides housing advice and helps people to develop the skills they need to live independently.
Training centres which provide employment training and work experience for ex-offenders, long-term unemployed people and others who need extra support to take on and complete a training course or find a job. These cater for over 13,000 people annually.
Work in prisons which includes advice and information services, training workshops and job-clubs. NACRO's Women Prisoners' Resource Centre runs advice surgeries in women's prisons and the 'Back on Track' employment project, and the Prisons Link Unit trains prison officers to give housing and employment advice to prisoners.
Youth activity projects which provide structured activities for young people living in deprived and disadvantaged areas. Most involve adult volunteers from the local community in setting up and running activities for over 5,000 young people each year.
Projects for families and communities which improve the overall safety and quality of life in areas of high unemployment, family poverty and poor amenities. Services include neighbour mediation, parenting classes, advice services and facilities for children and young people.
Projects working with children who are not attending school regularly or young people who are not in education, training or work at all. Projects work with schools, education authorities and other agencies and use outreach work to make contact with young people, helping them to return to mainstream education, or to make choices about other training or employment.
NACRO also provides consultancy, research and development services in the
fields of youth crime, race and criminal justice, crime prevention and community safety,
and mental health.
